Experimental Polarization State Tomography using Optimal Polarimeters

We report on the experimental implementation of a polarimeter based on a scheme known to be optimal for obtaining the polarization vector of ensembles of spin-1/2 quantum systems, and the alignment procedure for this polarimeter is discussed. We also show how to use this polarimeter to estimate the polarization state for identically prepared ensembles of single photons and photon pairs and extend the method to obtain the density matrix for generic multi-photon states. State reconstruction and performance of the polarimeter is illustrated by actual measurements on identically prepared ensembles of single photons and polarization entangled photon pairs

Mesoscale magnetism at the grain boundaries in colossal magnetoresistive films

We report the discovery of mesoscale regions with distinctive magnetic properties in epitaxial La1x_{1-x}Srx_{x}MnO3_{3} films which exhibit tunneling-like magnetoresistance across grain boundaries. By using temperature-dependent magnetic force microscopy we observe that the mesoscale regions are formed near the grain boundaries and have a different Curie temperature (up to 20 K {\it higher}) than the grain interiors. Our images provide direct evidence for previous speculations that the grain boundaries in thin films are not magnetically and electronically sharp interfaces. The size of the mesoscale regions varies with temperature and nature of the underlying defect.Comment: 4 pages of text, 4 figure

Treatment technology for leachate from faecal sludge drying beds

    Get PDF
The use of planted drying beds for faecal sludge treatment is effective for solid-liquid separation, but the leachate produced requires further treatment prior to discharge or reuse. This study investigates the potential of a new and low-cost solution for leachate treatment

    Topological dilaton black holes

In four-dimensional spacetime, when the two-sphere of black hole event horizons is replaced by a two-dimensional hypersurface with zero or negative constant curvature, the black hole is referred to as a topological black hole. In this paper we present some exact topological black hole solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with a Liouville-type dilaton potential.Comment: 8 pages, Revtex, no figure

Text localization in natural images through effective re identification of the MSER

© 2017 Association for Computing Machinery. Text detection and recognition from images have numerous applications for document analysis and information retrieval tasks. An accurate and robust method for detecting texts in natural scene images is proposed in this paper. Text-region candidates are detected using maximally stable extremal regions (MSER) and a machine learning based method is then applied to refine and validate the initial detection. The effectiveness of features based on aspect ratio, GLSM, LBP, HOG descriptors are investigated. Text-region classifiers of MLP, SVM and RF are trained using selections of these features and their combination. A publicly available multilingual dataset ICDAR 2003,2011 has been used to evaluate the method. The proposed method achieved excellent performance on both databases and the improvements are significant in terms of Precision, Recall, and F-measure. The results show that using a suitable feature combination and selection approach can can significantly increase the accuracy of the algorithms

Correlation-based feature selection for association rule mining in semantic annotation of mammographic medical images

    Get PDF
Mining of high dimension data for mammogram image classification is highly challenging. Feature reduction using subset selection plays enormous significance in the field of image mining to reduce the complexity of image mining process. This paper aims at investigating an improved image mining technique to enhance the automatic and semi-automatic semantic image annotation of mammography images using multivariate filters, which is the Correlation-based Feature Selection (CFS). This feature selection method is then applied onto two association rules mining methods, the Apriori and a modified genetic association rule mining technique, the GARM, to classify mammography images into their pathological labels. The findings show that the classification accuracy is improved with the use of CFS in both Apriori and GARM mining techniques

Synchronization and resonance in a driven system of coupled oscillators

We study the noise effects in a driven system of globally coupled oscillators, with particular attention to the interplay between driving and noise. The self-consistency equation for the order parameter, which measures the collective synchronization of the system, is derived; it is found that the total order parameter decreases monotonically with noise, indicating overall suppression of synchronization. Still, for large coupling strengths, there exists an optimal noise level at which the periodic (ac) component of the order parameter reaches its maximum. The response of the phase velocity is also examined and found to display resonance behavior.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
